Ben Ofori-Okai learned the difference between an MD and a PhD at a younger age than most when someone introduced his father, a chemist, as “Dr. Ofori-Okai.” “I was only 4 years old, but I remember thinking, ‘My dad’s not a doctor. He doesn’t treat people,’” Ofori-Okai says. “That’s when I learned that there was a different kind of doctor: a scientist.”

HEDS doctoral student Franziska Treffert has been awarded a two year doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). This award will be used to support her PhD research on neutron generation using cryogenic low-Z jets, advised by Dr. Siegfried H. Glenzer and Prof. Dr. Markus Roth (TU Darmstadt, Germany).

Siegfried Glenzer, SLAC's director of high energy density science, who received an honorary doctorate at Universitat Rostock in Germany "in appreciation of his pioneering contributions to the physics at high energy densities and to the diagnostics of dense plasmas."
